Show Notes

Today's guest is Naomi Yano, a Registered Psychotherapist and Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist who has experienced what it is like to hit rock bottom, which helps her relate to her clients and effectively support them. Their daughter was born prematurely in 2010 and had severe brain damage. They found out that she could not continue on and would have to be taken off life support. In addition to that, while that was going on, her husband was having an affair. After their daughter died, her husband left her to go with the person he was having an affair with. She lived through horrible moments and felt like she was losing her mind and didn't know what to do. She emphasizes that it is logical to feel terrible after going through a horrendous experience. She sought help from different professionals, self-help courses, and support groups. Her biggest turning point was taking a course on mindfulness-based stress reduction, or mindfulness meditation, for several weeks. This helped her ride the waves of her emotions and accept them as another experience. This helped her identify the different feelings she had and her reaction to each one and treat these as information. Naomi was then able to take action to let go or resolve these emotions accordingly.
